September 15th is Costa Rica's Independence day. Everyone starts celebrating on the 14th. Every child goes to his/her own school and at 6:00 PM everyone stops and sings the national anthem. Then the students have a parade with lanterns that they have made. We tried going to a local elementary school to see this lantern parade, but for some reason, it never happened. But we saw lots of very creative lanterns! On the actual 15th is a day of parades. Most communities have a parade with the children from all the area schools taking part in the parade. We did make it to the parade in our neighborhood.
Nathan and Juliana wore their red, white and blue to school.
Juliana thought her rain boots looked good with her outfit.
The children surprised us with a parade through the school.
Juliana wasn't too happy about being in the parade after she saw us!
Local school marching with flags
Local school marching band
Drum bands are very popular. Nathan would love to be in one of these
Typical Costan Rican dress for girls.
Watching the parade. (And being a Saturday in the fall, of course they were wearing their Gamecocks clothes!)
