Our trip to Chile - Santiago Part 1

On May 18th Jeff and flew to Chile for our vision trip.  We were so grateful for Jeff's parents.  They flew to Costa Rica to take care of the children so we could go.

We left Costa Rica at 8:00 AM and arrived in Chile at 8:00 PM.  As we flew over South America, we could see the snow covered mountains - incredible!

We started off the trip in Santiago, the capital city of Chile.  We loved the city.  Even though it was very large, 6 million people live there, it was easy to get around.  It was a very clean and well organized city.  A lot of the streets are tree lined and you can tell they really care about how their city looks.  It didn't feel like we were in South America at all.  Here are some pictures from our time in Santiago.

An older very pretty part of Santiago - we stayed here for 2 nights.

Double long bus!

We were waiting to be picked up to go to church and decided to walk around to check things out.  We turned the corner and WOW!!!  We saw the snow covered mountains.  It was incredible!  We found out later that the day we flew to Chile, there was a huge rainstorm.  That rain brought the snow.  So the day before there wasn't snow on the mountains!  What a blessing from the Lord.

A Subway restaurant inside the subway station.

We attended this English speaking International church on Sunday.  It was another blessing to be able to worship in English.  We were told, years ago, each denomination had their own English speaking congregation.  As a lot of internationals have left Santiago, there wasn't enough people to support all the different churches.  So they ended up combining several denominations into this international church.  Some parts of the service reminded us of being at First Pres!

The little white tunnel you see on the right side bottom of this picture is a bridge to cross over the road.

The seasons in Chile are opposite of what they are in the States.  So while it was May when we went, it was fall there.  See the leaves???  We are really looking forward to having all four seasons again.  Even though it will be a bit strange to be cold in June/July/August and hot in Dec/Jan/Feb!  From what we can tell, the weather is very similar to SC.  It gets pretty hot in the summer and gets cold, but not too cold and it only snows occasionally.  But as you can tell, the mountains are really close - so a 2 hour drive will let us do some pretty good snow skiing!

We were walking pass the US Embassy.
After we ate lunch, we walked to a really nice park.
Had to take pictures of the playgrounds for the children
